Abstract

Peer counseling services require peer counselors who have adequate interpersonal communication skills so they can provide effective support to their peers. This study aims to develop and test the effectiveness of the Peer Counseling Model (BTS) as an innovation in peer counseling services based on the local cultural values of Banten to improve the interpersonal communication competence of peer counselors. This study aims to develop and examine the effectiveness of the BTS Peer Counseling Model as an innovation in peer counseling services based on the local cultural values of Banten to improve the interpersonal communication competence of peer counselors. This study employed a Research and Development (R&D) design using the ADDIE model, which consisted of the stages of Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation, with 15 peer counselor students who participated in the training using the BTS Peer Counseling module that had been validated by content and media experts. Expert validation shows that the module has an excellent level of eligibility, with an average score of 86.25 for the content and 85 for the media aspect. The Wilcoxon test showed a significant increase in the peer counselors' interpersonal communication competence after the training, with a p-value of 0.001 (<0.05) and a matched-pairs rank-biserial correlation of = 0.88, indicating a large effect. These findings show that the BTS Peer Counseling Model is feasible, valid, and effective in improving the interpersonal communication competence of peer counselors, while offering new contributions through the integration of Banten's local wisdom into the development of peer counseling models in Islamic universities.
