Ṣūfī Dimension in Sūrah al-Fātiḥah: An Analysis of al-Sāmarrā'ī's Thought

This study investigates the Sūfī dimension of Surah al-Fātiḥah based on al-Sāmarrā‘ī. Previous research on al-Sāmarrā‘ī's exegesis has mostly focused on linguistic elements, even though the Qur'an's linguistic structure can open doors to deeper spiritual meanings. This study uses a qualitative method with a focus on a hermeneutic analysis approach. A linguistic analysis of word choice and grammatical structure, a Sūfī interpretation, and the derivation of Sūfī meanings underlying the text were the three data analysis techniques. The findings reveal that, first, lexical and structural choices, such as al-ḥamd, rabb al-‘ālamīn, al-raḥmān al-raḥīm, and iyyāka na‘budu wa iyyāka nasta‘īn, encode foundational Ṣūfī concepts including takhallī, taḥallī, and tajallī, as well as a balance between the exoteric law and esoteric knowledge. Second, al-Sāmarrā’ī’s analysis not only unveils the rhetorical and structural beauty of the Qur’anic text but also opens pathways to spiritual understanding that affirm the journey of the soul toward an insān al-kāmil. Third, this shows that in the pursuit of a thorough comprehension of the Qur'anic message, linguistic and Ṣūfī approaches are complementary rather than antagonistic. Fourth, the study thus proposes an integrative exegetical model that may serve as a valuable reference for the development of contemporary Qur’anic interpretation. It is intended that this contribution will open up new avenues for investigation into implementation-related topics.
