Julo-julo is a traditional community-based financial technique still practiced in Minangkabau society and widely considered an indigenous economic institution. Julo-julo also receives little attention in current research. This study aims to fill this gap by thoroughly examining julo-julo practice in Minangkabau's traditional economy through a review of relevant literature. A systematic literature review was conducted following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. We identified relevant research published between 2020 and 2026 in the Scopus and SINTA databases using predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria, resulting in 12 papers for qualitative synthesis. Review and synthesis of these articles show that julo-julo, as a traditional economic system of the Minangkabau people, positively affects the local economy. The values inherent in it, such as mutual aid, cooperation, and brotherhood, are relevant to the broader Indonesian cultural framework. Julo-julo practices are legally acceptable under Islamic economic law, as long as they are implemented correctly and in accordance with fiqh principles. Future research should move beyond descriptive analyses to examine how julo-julo adapts to digital financial ecosystems, intergenerational cultural change, and contemporary Islamic financial regulation.
