The Historiography of Hadith during the Mutaqaddimin Period (2nd-4th Centuries AH): From Early Codification to Methodological Consolidation

Hadith writing constitutes an essential aspect of Islamic intellectual history, serving to preserve the authenticity of the Prophet Muhammad’s teachings. This article aims to analyze the development of hadith historiography during the mutaqaddimin period (2nd-4th centuries AH) and to identify the principal sources employed in reconstructing the history of hadith during this era. This study adopts a qualitative approach using library research by examining classical works and contemporary studies on hadith codification, historiography, and methodology. The collected data were analyzed through a historical-analytical approach to reconstruct the evolution of hadith writing across different periods. The findings reveal that the second century AH (post-tabi’in) marked the initial phase of systematic hadith codification, the third century AH represented the peak of codification with the emergence of canonical hadith collections and the refinement of isnad criticism, while the fourth century AH was characterized by methodological consolidation through the development of sharh, mustakhraj, mustadrak, and other auxiliary disciplines of hadith studies. The study concludes that hadith writing during the mutaqaddimin period evolved progressively and laid the intellectual foundation for the subsequent development of hadith scholarship.
