The Historical Evolution of Islamic Education in 20th Century Kerala: Institutional Reform and Contemporary Transformation

Abstract

Kerala has developed a distinctive model of Islamic education in India by successfully integrating classical Islamic scholarly traditions with modern educational practices. This study aims to analyze the historical development of Islamic education in Kerala, particularly the transformation from mosque-based dars systems into modern, integrated Islamic educational institutions, as well as to identify the factors that have supported their continuity and development. This study employs a qualitative-historical approach, utilizing data from institutional histories, scholarly literature, organizational archives, institutional reports, and relevant documents. The data were analyzed using historical and thematic analysis by tracing changes in institutional structures, curricula, organizational arrangements, and pedagogical practices across different periods in the development of Islamic education in Kerala. The findings indicate that the transformation of Islamic education in Kerala has been influenced by the roles of visionary ulama and scholars, community involvement, curriculum modernization, the strengthening of institutional autonomy, the expansion of Islamic education to higher levels, and increased access to education for women. These developments have been further strengthened by philanthropic support, the migration of Kerala communities to the Gulf countries, the utilization of digital technologies, and international academic collaboration. These factors have enabled Islamic educational institutions to respond to social changes and contemporary educational demands without abandoning their Islamic foundations. This study concludes that the Kerala experience demonstrates a model of integration between tradition and modernity through integrated curricula, academic innovation, institutional strengthening, and community support. These findings provide a relevant perspective for advancing the discourse on Islamic educational reform in the context of contemporary Muslim societies.
